Kung Fu black belt Kevin Watson placed third in weapons and fourth in traditional forms and self defence at the Empire State Nationals Karate

The event is one of the largest NESKA tournaments (North American Sport Karate Association), sponsored by Joyce Santa Maria. It is a full-fledged karate tournament but accepts Kung Fu practitioners.

In the self defence category, Watson used another Kung Fu participant as his partners as it was a two-man team event. And considering there was no rehearsing between the pair, Watson was particularly pleased with his fourth placing.

"We had to do six techniques and it had to look as realistic as possible,'' he explained. "I picked up my partner at the tournament, a guy from a Kung Fu school in New York.

"This is the first time I've ever done self defence overseas and most people had teams well rehearsed.'' Also present at the tournament was a demonstration 18-man team from Great Britain who expressed interest in coming to Bermuda for a demonstration.

Watson, whose trip was made possible through the sponsorship of Graham Swan's gym and Crossroads Sports Shop, has now had eight top four finishes in three overseas tournaments this year. He is now looking forward to similar ventures abroad next year.
