By Lawrence TrottAbout half of the residents at the Salvation Army North Hamilton Emergency Shelter will be able to enjoy a nutritious breakfast for an entire year, thanks to a fundraising effort.Orange Bay Company raised $19,000 as part of its Sunrise Project.The home furnishings and accessories store sought donations from the community specifically in aid of the 54-bed facility’s breakfast programme.Donors include Arch Reinsurance, Flagstone Re, Belco, PwC, Bermuda Regiment Band, Bermuda Pest Control, Hiscox, Digicel, Chopsticks, Bermuda Forwarders and The Thursday Bridge Ladies.Co-owner Delight Morris was pleased with the response.“Due to the challenging economic times we are experiencing in Bermuda, many more of our neighbours find themselves in need of the assistance of The Salvation Army,” she stated.“But the slow economy also means that many companies and individuals are having to restrict their charitable donations. For that reason, we didn’t set any firm expectations for the Sunrise Project in terms of how much we could raise. We simply called upon other local businesses and our customers to do whatever they could to help fund this worthy cause, and we are very pleased with the results.”In accepting the Sunrise Project donation, Major Shawn Critch stated: “The North Hamilton Shelter is a safe place for people who, for reasons of financial, mental or domestic distress, find themselves with nowhere else to turn. Over the past several months, it has been near capacity every night, which means our breakfast programme is having to feed more people each day.“For many residents, the availability of a nutritious breakfast is a reassurance that we and the community care about their well being. It represents the beginning of a brighter day. On behalf of The Salvation Army and those who make use of the Shelter, I want to thank Orange Bay Company and everyone who contributed to the Sunrise Project for their generous support.”
