Kentoine tipped for top honour
North Village's pillar of strength Kentoine Jennings has emerged as the leading contender to walk away with MVP honours at Bermuda Football Association's 2001/02 senior awards ceremony, slated for Saturday, May 4, at the Ocean View Golf Club.
In what turned out to be memorable year for the Reds, in which they pulled off an impressive league and FA Cup double, Jennings again led his team from the back, while also regularly getting in on the scoring act, delighting Village's loyal following with his trademark powerful headers.
Devonshire Cougars' explosive attacking pair of Heys Wolfe and Raymond Beach, who were both central to Cougars' successful campaign in which they won their very first major soccer title, defeating Village 3-2 in the Martonmere Cup Final in November, have also been nominated for MVP.
Jennings is also on the list for Defensive Player of the Year honours, while as expected PHC's Stanton Lewis and Cougars' Galvin Butterfield are in the running.
Dandy Town's Jason Smith heads the list for goalkeeping honours, and Boulevard's attacking duo of Tekeyhi Walker and First Division top marksman Melchisidec Gibbons are firm candidates for Young Player of the Year awards along with Cougars' Wolfe and Beach.
Village coach Scott Morton has been nominated for Coach of the Year as has retiring Dandy Town coach Andrew Basome and Boulevard's John Rebello.
In the Women's Division Rude Girls' Erica Russell and veteran forward Chevonne Furbert are among those battling for MVP honours.
Hemisphere Royals' Denise Ward is in line for Defensive Player of the Year and Rude Girls' Tanika White will look to become Goalkeeper of the Year.
Meanwhile, the Island's officials will be recognised for their contribution in the middle. FIFA officials Stuart Crockwell, Anthony Mouchette and Lyndon Raynor are all leading candidates to grab the 2001/02 Official of the Year award.
Coaches in the Premier, First and Women's Division were invited by the BFA to nominate three individuals for each category with the first choice receiving five points, the second three points and the third one point.
After ballots were totalled the top four nominees were selected to attend the awards ceremony where the winners will be revealed.
