Sub surfaces off East End
Island yesterday morning was the highlight in a quiet week for Bermuda's ship spotters.
The submarine, which surfaced in the waters east of the Island so it could drop off a crew member for compassionate leave, cannot be named for military security purposes, said John S. Darrell President Donald MacPherson.
The only other unusual shipping twist this week saw two separate local agents representing a single Bermuda-visitor.
The brand new French cable ship Fresnel arrived yesterday in Dockyard with a load of cable for the Island.
While John S. Darrell represents the ship's owner, who is understood to be the French Government, Meyer Agencies represents the vessel's charterers -- Cable & Wireless.
Elsewhere Container Ship Management Vice President Robert (Skippy) Lewis reported that the Oleander arrived from Port Elizabeth, New Jersey at 5 p.m.
on Sunday and berthed in Hamilton.
There it off loaded 151 dry containers, 42 refrigerated containers, five road trailers, three cars and one high-low machine before leaving port at 8 a.m.
yesterday for the return voyage to the US.
And Meyer Freight spokesman Stephen Paynter said the Bermuda Islander was due to arrive tomorrow from the US when it would berth in Hamilton.
It is set to off load 102 containers including 18 refrigerated containers plus two trucks before returning to Salem, New Jersey.
