The Bermuda Regiment is gearing up for their annual overseas camp.

Alpha Company and Support Company, along with Regimental Headquarters, will travel to Jamaica from April 24 to May 7 for "Exercise Irie Onion".

While there, soldiers will live and train out of Titchfield Camp in Port Antonio on the north-eastern coast of the Caribbean island.

Lieutenant Colonel Brian Gonsalves stated his hopes for the camp.

"My aim for Ex Irie Onion is to exercise the Regiment in high intensity operations over a protracted period of time in order to enhance operational effectiveness, to ensure that the Bermuda Regiment, your Regiment, is prepared to handle any challenges Bermuda may ask of it," the Commanding Officer said.

"At the same time, we hope to continue to develop the already close ties enjoyed between the Regiment, the JDF [Jamaica Defence Force] and the people of Jamaica."

Captain Julian Wheddon said Regiment soldiers will be taking part in a series of military training exercises with the help of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).

"During the [exercise] we will be looking to accomplish the following objectives: practice and test administration at all levels throughout the [exercise]; practice and test battle procedure at all levels of command; practice command and control at all levels; develop management and leadership skill and qualities; and improve the standard of physical fitness, stamina and endurance.

"Our specialist sub-units will also undergo training with their counterparts, the JDF. Our boat troop will train with the JDF Coast Guard, our guns and assault pioneers with the Engineer Regiment and our Regimental police with the military police, while our medics will undertake a first responders' course at the University of West Indies, as well as work in the Kingston Public Hospital."
