Youngsters impress at CUT Games

Twenty-four Bermuda athletes, representing the Bermuda Union of Teachers, competed against some 300 others from eight CUT member countries.

The meet was due to conclude on Sunday night with Trinidad and Tobago looking to hold onto their overall lead over Barbados.

After the opening ceremonies on Friday, Bermuda opened the competition with a gold medal when 14-year-old Patrina Swan won the open girls 800 metres with a pesonal best time of two minutes, 21.81 seconds.

In the only other finals of the night, Bermuda picked up bronze medals from Jeremiah Smith (in the boys open 800m, also in a PB time of 2:08.37) and Danielle Watson (girls under-11 long jump, with a leap of 4.33 metres).

The Bermuda contingent improved their medal haul to 12 on Saturday on the strength of two gold medals from Raneika Bean.

Bean won the girls under-15 100m then set a meet record in the high jump with a personal best of 1.66 metres. At the 1994 Games in St. Kitts, Bean set the girls under-13 mark.

The other gold went to Janine Scott in the girls under-15 400m with a personal best of 57.43.

Smith won his second medal of the competiton when he was second in the open boys 1500m.

Also grabbing silvers were Latisha Perinchief in the girls under-11 cricket ball throw; Shanae Fubler in the girls under-9 cricket ball throw; Antonio Lowe in the boys under-11 400m and Angela Brangman in the girls under-13 100m.

Gabriel Wilkinson also won a pair of medals, finishing third in the boys under-15 discus and javelin. Other bronze medals were won by Shanay Scott (girls under-13 high jump) and Kristen Eve (girls under-13 long jump).

Competing at the Games are athletes from Trinidad and Tobago, St.Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Guyana, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Martinique and hosts Barbados.

The Bermuda team, accompanied by CUT teachers and chaperones, are scheduled to return home on Thursday.
