affected Ewert "Slippery'' Joell's relationship with guests at the Reefs.

With many repeat visitors fondly describing him as one of the reasons why they so enjoy their stays at the resort, the long-time bartender must be doing something right. "Names are very hard for me,'' he explained, "but I know several of the repeat visitors by face and although I remember what they drink at the time, they switch so much that nowadays it's hard to pinpoint. There are times when I'll put a drink up that they usually like and they'll say, `No Slippery, I'm switching today.' But they generally drink beer and Planters Punches.'' Mr. Joell said he began working at the resort in 1952 as a bellboy, remaining in that position for many years. "I was then a barwaiter for I've seen it grow bartender. I used to work in the main bar upstairs but I'm now in the Sun Bar which serves the restaurant, Coconuts. This September coming will be 45 years that I've worked there but once you like something, you stick with it. It was very nice working at the Reefs back then and it still is.'' Mr. Joell said the family atmosphere makes the Reefs and is happy to see it turn 50. "When I started, it was just a small place, but over the years I've seen it grow to what it is today,'' he said. "It's really lovely at the Reefs. It's gone a long way and so we're all ready to celebrate the 50th anniversary and I just appreciate that I and the staff are involved in the celebrations. "But it's like a family here. You've got to treat your staff well and we've got good management. All the bosses there are nice -- Mr. Dodwell, Mr. Stephens, and they're also nice people to work for.
