Motorboat flips over
a 30-foot cabin cruiser flipped off the southwest end of Dockyard late on Saturday night.
The operator of the boat Fighting Back was breathalysed and failed, Police confirmed yesterday.
None of his passengers drowned or was injured thanks to fast action by a HMS Malabar leading radio operator and boaters in the area.
The LRO heard screaming coming from the back of his house in Dockyard at about 11.30 p.m., a Harbour Radio spokesman said. Investigating, he saw that a boat had flipped over near the south breakwater and quickly used his radio to contact Harbour Radio which in turn alerted boaters in the area and Marine Police.
The boats Onion Patch and Barracuda swiftly came to the rescue and helped Marine Police pull the people out of the water. Marine Police towed the flipped boat out of the way of other marine traffic.
It is believed the boat overturned when the operator made a fairly sharp turn at a high speed. A Harbour Radio spokesman said there was no evidence the boat hit anything.
The driver of the boat will be appearing in Magistrates' Court in due course.
Police would not release his name.
