Bartoszak, Barreto banking on repeat
believed to have been secured by organisers for a return trip to Bermuda to conduct defences of their respective titles during International Race Weekend.
Bartoszak of Poland is the reigning champion of the Bank of Butterfield Elite Mile, while Mexico's Barreto would be seeking a hat-trick of triumphs in the ADT 10K.
The Polish native is expected on the Island this weekend for the purpose of getting acclimatised and to finalise his preparation for the event, which takes place on Friday, January 14 and traditionally kicks off an exciting three days of racing.
Also included -- as well as the aforementioned ADT 10K -- are the ADT Bermuda Marathon and ADT Bermuda Half-Marathon.
One possibility -- in terms of a tune-up race -- for Bartoszak is the annual Princess to Princess Road Race which takes place on Sunday.
Last year saw the slender runner rebound from a second place finish behind American Joe Falcon in 1992 to seize the crown for himself, running from the front and easily holding off a late challenge by Greg Whitely of the US.
Battling a tricky crosswind common to Front Street, Bartoszak's time of four minutes, 5.1 seconds was a second slower than Falcon's course record of 4:04.1 set in 1992, and well off the sub-four minute time needed to collect a $10,000 bonus which remains on offer for this year's race.
"Last year I was second, this year first, maybe next year (this year) will be better and I can get the record,'' said an elated winner at the time... and he may yet get his wish in 1994.
Meanwhile, total domination would describe the effort put forth by Barreto a year ago, as he similarly annihilated all-comers.
Ironically, it was Bartoszak who came closest to challenging the Mexican for the mantle of champion, but having endured an exhausting previous night the former had little left to usurp the powerful Barreto.
The race was effectively over after three miles when Barreto produced a surge on Middle Road, just past National Sports Club, and none of the competition responded.
From that point he ran alone for the remainder of the race, although he was visibly tired nearing the finish at National Stadium, allowing Bartoszak to close within 90 yards.
Nevertheless, at the finish, Barreto's time of 30:01 was 14 seconds faster than that of the Pole, despite being well off Briton Geoff Smith's course record of 28:14.
It is unknown whether men's and women's 1993 marathon champions Robert Yara and Kim Goff, or women's 10K winner Anne Marie Letko will return for another try, but more names are expected to be revealed during a press conference today.
Entries close at 5 p.m. tomorrow for Sunday's Princess to Princess Road Race.
