another stellar field for the event that has grown into a major international event.

While not yet ready to reveal any names of those set to compete in the Elite Mile -- the premier race -- Peter Lever said that inquiries had been made by athletes from England, Canada, South Africa, Belgium, United States, Morocco, Poland and New Zealand.

He added that there was hope of a return by last year's winner Michael Bartoszak of Poland.

A major point of concern also was the ability to attract sponsors to pay for air fare and accommodation for the various overseas runners and in this regard made a special appeal to corporations, clubs, organisations and individuals for assistance.

Still up for grabs is a $10,000 prize for the first runner to break four minutes. It is a reward that has proven elusive despite the presence of a number of runners with previous sub-four minute times.

"I thought the last time was pretty ideal and was surprised it didn't go,'' said Lever. "It's a case of getting the right people together to push each other.'' A cross-wind that gained in momentum just prior to the elite race after lying dormant for most of the preliminary races hindered any record attempt earlier this year.

Still, Bartoszak thrilled a packed Front Street crowd, running from the front and holding off a late challenge from American Greg Whitely.

The Pole clocked four minutes, 5.1 seconds compared to Whitely's 4:06.78, but came up shy of another American Joe Falcon's course record 4:04.16 set in 1992.

Lever added that the status of the event remained high and that it was a definite plus for the Island.

"It's getting bigger in terms of quality and people knowing about the event.

"Also it provides an obvious boost in tourism, which in turn means added finances for Bermuda and highlights the Island internationally.'' Sports network giant ESPN were on hand for last year's event, but are said to be concentrating on the Saturday ADT Bermuda 10-K this time around, with a first showing set for Monday, January 31.

A change has been made to the starting time of the ADT Bermuda Marathon and Half Marathon, with the commencement time set for 9 a.m. instead of 10 a.m..

Prize money has also been increased with a breakdown of $3,000, $2,000, $1,000 for the top three finishers in the marathon -- male and female categories -- and $500, $300 and $200 for the top trio of locals.

Those wishing to offer sponsorship can contact co-ordinator Margaret Young at 295-1567.
