Wade named assistant coach for St.George?s
St.George?s Cricket Club announced yesterday that former Cup Match skipper Clevie Wade has been appointed assistant coach to George Cannonier.
Wade, who conducted a rigorous training session at the club earlier this week in the absence of Cannonier, captained St.George?s to Budweiser KO Cup glory in 1982 and a memorable three-wicket Cup Match triumph over John Tucker?s Somerset at Somerset Cricket Club in 1983.
Wade has since moved on to Southampton Rangers but has always maintained close ties with the East End club.
?Clevie has been around the team many years and so his appointment is only natural progression,? stated St.George?s Cricket Club president Neil Paynter.
?Clevie has always been a staunch St.George?s supporter, a former captain and a leader on and off the field.?
Wade averaged 23.82 runs from 31 innings with a high score of 112, achieved at Wellington Oval in 1985, during his Cup Match career.
He also claimed 37 wickets at an average of 21.80 and shares the second best partnership record for the seventh-wicket (137) with Ricky Hodsoll and sixth best with Charlie Marshall for the fifth wicket (93).
?To be honest I am very honoured to be a part of the programme once again,? Wade told . ?As a St.George?s die-hard my love has always been there and now to be appointed assistant coach is another stepping stone for me.?
Wade has assisted Barry Sousa as team manager in recent years. Sousa will again manage the team this summer.
?To be appointed assistant coach allows me to be more involved with the team and players,? Wade added. ?Now I can lend my experience of playing Cup Match over the years and give back to the players. And I am really looking forward to the challenge.?
Wade is also looking forward to working alongside Cannonier.
?George has been around the game for a very long time,? he said. ?He is very knowledgeable and I know he has a plan put in place that we can sit and discuss, so we can both work together and get the job done.?
