Players reflect on their triumph
Proudly displaying the under-15 Americas Regional Championship cricket trophy yesterday, Bermuda skipper Rodney Trott and vice-captain Orande Bascome both gave accounts of last week's convincing triumph in Florida.
Speaking after a press conference attended by coaches George Cannonier, Grant Smith, Mark Harper, Bermuda Cricket Board of Control treasurer Neil Speight and bank director David Lang, the young pair continued to bask in the glory of last week's impressive performances.
"It was extremely hot and dry over there," said Trott of the overseas conditions.
"The experience was great because for some it was their first time playing overseas and we all just had fun and enjoyed our cricket."
The Bermuda team won all five of their matches by a convincing margin to finish top at the end of the round-robin format.
For vice-captain Bascome, son of St.George's' seam bowler Herbie Bascome, this was his second tour with the under-15 squad, having represented the Island last year in the Cayman Islands.
"Overall, the opposition wasn't that competitive. As you can see no team managed to score 100 runs against us so we did play to our full potential," said Bascome.
Both players expressed a desire to play cricket at the professional level overseas in the future.
Last week's tournament in Orlando saw the Island team complete a clean sweep to hoist the inaugural tournament held at the Disney Wide World of Sport Complex.
Representing sponsors, the Bank of Bermuda, Lang said the bank was extremely pleased to have supported the youth team for the past few years.
"We are tremendously proud of them," he said. "The Bank of Bermuda likes nothing better than to see Bermuda's youth succeed in cricket.
"We know a lot about fours and a lot about sixes and now we have a five, because they won five out of five and so Bermuda's future in the cricket world looks very bright indeed.
"We wish them all the success for the future and hope that this particular group, and the coach has already expressed his desire, stay together as a team because they have so much talent and ability."
