LeiLanni Nesbeth gets 50 minutes in Florida State’s 3-0 tournament opener

LeiLanni Nesbeth and her Florida State University team are set for a third-round meeting with unseeded Penn State in the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday after a 3-0 win over Milwaukee in Cary, North Carolina, on Saturday.

The top-seeded Florida State booked their place in the last 16 after a goalless first half. The Lady Seminoles had several chances to break the deadlock in the first half with seven attempts at goal, three on target, as the Milwaukee goalkeeper made some key saves.

FSU, whose perfect record this season progressed to 12-0, kept up the pressure in the second half and were rewarded with the opening goal in the 49th minute when Kristen McFarland scored her first of the season, assisted by Cara Robbins.

Robbins went close to adding a second goal soon after, but put her effort over the top from a Jenna Nighswonger corner.

The top seeds kept on the pressure late in the game and were rewarded with two more goals in the 76th and 79th minutes to seal a deserved victory. Gabby Carle scored her first goal of the season from a Nighswonger corner to make it 2-0, before Jaelin Howell added the third three minutes later to book Florida State’s spot in the last 16.

Nesbeth started the match and played 50 minutes in total after coming back on late in the match.

The Penn State will start at 4pm Bermuda time. The Lady Nittany Lions upset No 16 Vanderbilt 2-0.

Also in action on Wednesday will be second seeds North Carolina against Washington, while third-ranked UCLA take on Clemson.
