Promising start for Island trio
Harbour yesterday as sunshine and moderate breezes made for an exciting afternoon for spectators and competitors alike.
Bermudians Paula Lewin, Adam Barboza and Blythe Walker carried the Bermuda banner proudly on the first day of the qualification round robin and were each rewarded for their efforts with two wins apiece.
Lewin and Barboza each ended the day tied for second with two wins against a single loss in group one, while Walker was fifth out of eight in group two, standing an even 2-2. Lewin and Barboza are due to race four more times today, while Walker has three matches remaining and each will look to at least duplicate yesterday's showings with the top four set to go through to the first round.
Lewin recorded wins over Denmark's Anders Geert-Jensen (0-3) and fellow female J.J.Isler (0-3) of the United States before falling to Barboza on her final time out, while Barboza, who was a late addition to the competition after Germany's Jochen Schumann withdrew, added a win against German Markus Wieser (2-1), but fell to Ross MacDonald of Canada.
Walker counted wins over Andy Beadsworth (3-1) of England and American John Kolius (2-2) against defeats at the hands of Kiwi John Cutler (3-1) and Peter Holmberg (3-1) of the British Virgin Islands.
Emerging as the opening day star though was Great Britain's Chris Law, who sailed with precision and ended the day a perfect 3-0 to top group one.
Four stand level with identical 3-1 records at the top of group two.
