Madelyn Moore blazed her way to two national records and equalled another during a sparkling display in the pool competing for the University of Northern Colorado in Florida at the weekend.

The 20-year-old swimmer broke Kiera Aitken’s 12-year-old national record in the 100 metres freestyle, lowered her own national record in the 50 metres butterfly and equalled the national record in the 50 metres freestyle, which she also held heading into the Amateur Swimming Union of the Americas Tokyo Qualifier held at the Orlando Health National Training Centre.

Moore posted a 56.57 in the 100 free to eclipse the previous national record of 56:99 set by former Olympian Aitken at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, Italy.

She also lowered her national record in the 50 fly from 27.68 to 27.03 and equalled her national record in the 50 free of 25.95.

“I am so excited to have come away with three national records after this meet,” an elated Moore told The Royal Gazette.

“I think probably the most exciting was the 100 free because it was totally unexpected. I just wanted to break 56 seconds and I went in 56.57, which for me is amazing.”

The Western Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year capped off another brilliant display by securing the gold medal in the 50 free final, which she shared with rival Jeserik Pinto who touched the wall at the same time.

“The gold medal was just kind of the icing on top of the cake,” Moore added. “I was just really happy with my time and I think that was the most exciting part for me.”

Ben Smith, the national coach, is excited and encouraged by the progress that the swimmer has made in the past year.

“With the results that Maddy has put in place in university over this last year we were hopeful that she would be able to turn that from short course season to long course and obviously that’s happened,” he said.

“I’m really excited with the results, specifically her 100 freestyle, which has shown a real growth in endurance in her races.

“Probably just a little bit of tidying up and some working on her hands speed we’ll see a further drop in the 50. But the fact that she can come home in the 100 and bring in that really fast time shows what’s happened over the last year since she’s been training in Colorado.”

Moore is trying to qualify for this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo in the 50 free which is her speciality event.

The A qualifying standard in the women’s 50 free stands at 24.77 and the B standard at 25.51.

The time that the Sharks Swim Club member posted in the 50 free at the weekend is the fastest she has swam in three years and not far off the qualifying mark needed to secure her spot at the upcoming Games in Tokyo.

“Looking at the times she was able to perform across multiple events over the weekend shows you the quality of her swimming right now,” Smith added. “She should be flying high, really excited about the opportunities.

“I’m in the process now of looking for a couple of more qualifying events for her to attend between now and the qualifying deadline at the end of June.

“So she will be going back to train and prepare and hopefully be able to hit that time after learning what she did at the meet over the weekend.”

Moore was among four Bermudians competing at the recent meet in Florida which also included siblings Emma and Jack Harvey, and Jesse Washington.
