Four charged in heroin smuggling plot

Four members of an alleged plot to smuggle drugs into Bermuda have been charged together in Magistrates’ Court.The four are all charged with conspiring to import heroin with an estimated street value of just under $1 million. All four were arrested on June 1. David Carroll, 31, of Workmen’s Lane, Hamilton Parish; Craig Hatherley, 26, of Paget; Lorenzo Lottimore, 31, of Rocklands Road, Warwick and Loren Marshall, 27, of Anchorage View Road, St George’s, stood in the dock before Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo and a gallery packed with family members.They were not required to enter a plea, since the case is indictable only and must be heard before the Supreme Court. They are charged with conspiring with persons in Bermuda and elsewhere who were not before the court, between a date unknown and June 1.Additionally, Mr Carroll is charged with conspiring with others not before the court to import almost two kilos of cannabis into Bermuda. According to Crown counsel Tawana Tannock, the street value of the cannabis has been estimated by police as just below $100,000.The quantity of heroin was given as 397 grams.After hearing arguments from defence lawyers Larry Mussenden, Phil Perinchief and Charles Richardson, Mr Tokunbo granted each man bail of $200,000, on the condition that they surrender travel documents and report twice a week to police.The four will return to court for mention on June 27.
