Sizzling Sims enjoys another top finish

In form: Michael Sims

In-form Michael Sims pocketed another $10,000 yesterday as he continued to enjoy the best spell of his professional golf career.

Building on the success of his last three Nationwide Tour events in which he also made the cut and made the money, Sims again challenged the leaders at the $625,000 South Georgia Classic over the weekend.

Finishing with a one-under-par 71 on the monster 7,781-yard. par 72 Kinderlou Golf Club course – the longest course on the Nationwide circuit – the 30-year-old Bermudian ended the tournament in a tie for 15th on six-under-par 282, having always put himself in contention after a superb opening round of four-under 68.

He followed that with one-under 71 on Friday and an even-par of 72 on Saturday.

Yesterday he put three birdies on his card, offset by two bogeys. But throughout the four rounds he posted 12 birdies and not a single double bogey – a blip that had marred previous rounds this year.

Going into this weekend's event, Sims was placed 38th on the Tour money list and will almost certainly move up the ranks when the new money-earnings list is released today.– He's already secured a place in the field for the rest of this year's Nationwide Tour events with his ultimate goal a place in the top 25 money-earners, all of whom automatically advance to the world's most lucrative circuit, the Tiger Woods-dominated US PGA Tour.

A week ago Sims tied for 15th at the $550,000 Athens Regional Foundation Classic also in Georgia, where he picked up a cheque for $8,800.

He made a storming start to his Tour season, placing ninth at the Louisiana Open where he was rewarded with more than $13,000 and then placed in a six-way tie for 32nd at the Stonebrae Classic at the TPC San Francisco Bay GC where he picked up over $3,000.

Sims said recently he gave much credit for his success to coach Mike Taylor with whom he has been working in Sea Island, Georgia over the winter months.

He earned partial exemption to the Nationwide Tour last November at the annual PGA Tour Qualifying School, having lost Nationwide status a year earlier.

His latest event, the South Georgia Classic, was won by South African Garth Mulroy who closed with a 69 for a 275 total, one shot ahead of American Chris Tidland.

Mulroy was presented with a cheque for $112,000.
