Local prison officers look to lock up tri-series title
Two-time champions Cayman Islands will defend their Corrections Triangular Tournament title on local soil later this month against Jamaica and hosts Bermuda.
The three-year-old tournament, involving prison officers from the Caribbean and Bermuda, will be staged at Police Field from September 27 to 29.
Cayman will again boast the likes of opening batsman Steve Gordon, who struck 65 against Bermuda?s national team in last year?s ICC Intercontinental Cup in Toronto, and talented all-rounder Sahid Mohammed.
However, the champions could find their work cut out for them against Bermuda, who have managed to assemble one of their strongest teams in recent years containing four players with international experience, two of whom still compete in the Premier Division.
?A lot of our guys maybe past their prime, but this is still a very experienced team,? said Bermuda vice-captain Donald Norford, a top opening batsman with Devonshire Rec in the 1980s.
Norford represented Bermuda at the Red Stripe Bowl in the Caribbean while skipper Aaron Adams, Wendell White and Kenny Philip have also played at the international level.
?Jamaica and Cayman have very good teams, but I think this year we have a decent team that is up to the challenge,? Norford continued. ?And this is our first time hosting the tournament, so we are looking forward to putting our best foot forward.?
Bermuda?s preparation for the series has seen them compete in Somerset CC?s ongoing second annual 20/20 tournament, the men in uniform scoring a huge upset by ousting Premier outfit Western Stars in the last round held under floodlights.
?We entered the 20/20 to maintain our fitness and we have also been training down at Cleveland County (Harris Bay) in their nets,? Norford explained. ?So we are looking forward to competing and playing at home where we intend to give a good account of ourselves.?
Bermuda take on Jamaica in the tour opener on Wednesday, September 27 before Cayman begin their defence against Jamaica on Thursday, September 28.
The champions will then close out against Bermuda on Friday, September 29. : Aaron Adams (captain), Donald Norford (vice -capt), Kenny Philip, Wendell White, Ryan Belboda, Freston Hurdle, Johnny Richardson, Lionel Tannock, Craig Smith, Marvin Trott, Caldon Grimes, Millett Rawlins, Jovonne Welsh, Onslow Virgil.
