Hood get it right against BAA
Knockout Cup when they fell 2-1 to in-form Robin Hood on Saturday.
Hood made up for squandering what looked to be a certain win the previous week -- the pair drew 4-4 in league action at BAA field -- this time disallowing any last-moment heroics by the home side.
Colin Alexander spurred Hood into an early lead, netting in the 27th minute and that one-goal margin held up through to the interval.
After 76 minutes, Alex McLaughlin doubled the advantage for the visitors before Wanderers' Trevor Gillis pulled a goal back three minutes from the end.
Meanwhile, controversy filled the conclusion of the west-end derby at Malabar involving Somerset Extros and Island Rangers.
Penalty kicks were required to decide the outcome after the score remained deadlocked at 3-3 after regulation and overtime.
However, the dilemma came as Extros were called to take just three penalties -- in what was supposed to be a best-of-five -- and Rangers four, with the former netting twice and the latter once.
Another success from the spot for Extros would have sealed the deal but a miss would have allowed Rangers to remain alive. However, this scenario never evolved as referee Gernot Wilkie declared Extros the victors, to the befuddlement and displeasure of the Rangers players.
Earlier, Stevie Riley (two) and Jerry-Lynn Simons had provided goals for Extros, who led 2-0 at the half. Rangers came back in the second as Wendell Anderson, Michael Bremar and Walde Tansae all netted one apiece.
At Shelly Bay, Exiles spotted Fire Service an early lead on a Troy Furbert strike, but rallied for a 3-1 triumph.
Edwin Ford, Marvin Hassan and Antoine Cannonier sparked Exiles' comeback to preserve them a spot in the semifinals, where they face Hood.
Similarly earning a tie -- against Extros -- were Lobster Pot, who ousted Devonshire Colts All-Stars 1-0 at Frog Lane field on a late goal from Tony Smith.
In the Alliance Division Knockout Cup, Boulevard, St. George's, Dandy Town and PHC all qualified for the semifinal round following big wins.
Dandy Town won in a landslide against pathetic St. David's, scorching the net 15 times against no reply from the Islanders.
Troy Durham, Kris Martin and Jeffrey Butterfield all registered hat-tricks, while Milford Waldron scored twice. Scoring once were Mike Wells, Darren Simons, Troy Harvey and Shannon Gilbert.
Devonshire Cougars became victims of Boulevard at the Den, losing 3-1, in a match where Boulevard scored all four goals.
Vernon Eve and Clevie Rogers (two) scored in the conventional fashion for the Blazers, while Kenny Darrell scored in his own net.
At Bernard Park, St. George's defeated North Village 8-3 as Donald Whitfield distinguished himself in scoring a hat-trick. Stevie Dickinson and Del Tyrell added two apiece and Melvin Simmons notched the other.
The lone other match had PHC down Hamilton Parish 6-1.
KRIS MARTIN -- Hat-trick against St. David's.
