Sen. Wendell Hollis (UBP) said the drugs were seized by Customs Officers in four swoops following tip-offs.

He revealed the figures in answer to questions by Opposition senators.

Sen. Hollis added there were no Customs Officers on cruise ships intercepting drugs.

Seizures were made when ships came into port, he told senators on Wednesday.

Afterwards, Collector of Customs Mr. Gerry Ardis explained that Customs Officers were once on cruise ships for "pre-clearance purposes''.

But he stressed the practice was discontinued. It was no longer necessary.

Mr. Ardis said officers had never travelled on cruise ships for drugs interception. And he declined to say whether this would be a good idea.

"That is an operational matter,'' he said.

He added, however, one or two officers had been trained on board ships on how to search for drugs.

Meanwhile, plans are likely for protective fencing at Ordnance Island for the 1994 arrival of a regular cruise ship.

Mr. Ardis said he was unaware of any definite proposals by Customs.

But he believed there would be a "sterile area'' where people from ships would gather immediately after disembarking.

"I imagine something will be done, so that people just won't walk on to the streets. We have to meet international regulations,'' he said.
