Mr. Burgess was called in by Speaker Ernest DeCouto after slamming the door to the Chamber on his way out.

But the BIU leader insisted yesterday he "didn't slam any door or break any rules of this House.'' And he maintained he had demonstrated the door was faulty some days after the incident.

But Mr. DeCouto interrupted: "Surely you have to apologise to the Speaker...anyone passing through that door has the responsibility to make sure the door doesn't slam.'' And he pointed out that several people had used the same door during yesterday's session of the House and it had not slammed once.

Mr. DeCouto added: "I'm just asking you to apologise to the Speaker -- as you agreed to do in my chambers.'' Mr. Burgess said: "I apologise if you think that's what I did. If anyone felt offended I apologise.'' Mr. Burgess -- the Opposition Progressive Labour Party's newest MP -- marched out of the motion to adjourn in the House two weeks ago.

He flared up after he stood to speak at the same time as PLP Shadow Health Minister Renee Webb .

Mr. DeCouto allowed Ms Webb to speak, forcing Mr. Burgess to sit down.

Apparently feeling snubbed, Mr. Burgess walked out and slammed the door behind him. A furious Mr. DeCouto ordered Sergeant-at-Arms Michael Fuhrtz to bring Mr. Burgess back into the Chamber -- but the MP had already left the building.
