Canadian citizens are now required to show their passports when they arrive in Bermuda.

The Department of Immigration made the move in an attempt to standardise the process for Canadians entering the Island, who in the past were not required to carry a passport. They were instead only required to present long-form birth certificates with valid photo identification as proof of citizenship.

"Canada is an ever-important tourism market for Bermuda, and we don't anticipate this change to cause a noticeable impact on Canadians travelling to the destination," said William Griffith, Director of Tourism for Bermuda.

"Reports indicate nearly 100 percent of all Canadians that visited Bermuda over the past year have entered using a valid passport and with WestJet's new daily non-stop service from Toronto's Pearson International Airport providing additional options to visit, we feel confident that Bermuda will continue to be a popular destination for Canadians."

The move came into effect on May 1.
