Rec determined to reclaim cup
Devonshire Recreation Club skipper Dean Stephens is confident his team have what it takes to dethrone cup holders Police in tomorrow?s Central Counties second round clash at Police Field.
Devonshire are bidding to reclaim the showpiece they relinquished to Western Stars last summer.
Earlier this month Police produced the season?s biggest upset when they handed champions Stars a crushing 106-run defeat at St.John?s Field.
Stars paid a heavy price for allowing their First Division opponents to ease themselves off the hook after having them in early trouble at 92 for four.
On the back of an unbeaten century (116) from Trinidadian Carlton Jackson and a half-century (55) from Anderson Cumberbatch, Police romped to a convincing win.
But Stephens says his team will not make the same mistake as Stars, insisting his players have the necessary weapons to beat Police.
?We are not thinking about anything else other than winning the cup back,? said Stephens, currently bidding to break into Somerset?s Cup Match team this summer.
?We should not have lost it last year, but everyone is geared up for the match and ready to go. And we definitely intend to win the cup back on Saturday and the guys have really been training hard this week.?
Devonshire, however, could be without veteran all-rounder Dennis Williams who notified team officials earlier in the week he might not be available to play for personal reasons.
The boys from the Den will again be without former skipper Winston (Herb) Trott jr who has yet to make an appearance this season due to a bothersome injury.
Trott?s absence has provided Stephens with an opportunity to lead the club he joined two seasons ago from Somerset Bridge. And in only a short period of time the talented all-rounder has guided the side to the Second Division Two-Day title.
Stephens has also enjoyed success with the bat, scoring a season-high 114 against Warwick at Southampton Oval last month. The former Bridge and Southampton Rangers cricketer topped the Two-Day League batting averages after scoring 192 from three innings for an average of 96.00.
Stephens also claimed 12 wickets for 72 runs off 37.1 overs with 11 maidens at an average of six runs per wicket.
Devonshire?s hopes will again rest heavily on the skipper?s shoulders and those of his cousins Derek, Ricardo and Lamont Brangman heading into tomorrow?s clash.
?Our goal is to win our divisions and anything else we can,? Stephens added. ?And having already won the Second Division (Two-Day) title everyone has remained on the same page and been willing to put in the required work.?
As for his own game, Stephens explained: ?I put in a lot of pre-season training and at the moment I think things are coming along okay.
?But I still think I need to work on my concentration at the crease because I always seem to get myself out. So my goal now is to try and stay at the crease longer. And even though I?m generally pleased with my game at the moment, I know I can get a lot better.?
Stephens said he wasn?t surprised to see Police wrest the cup from Stars in the first round.
?Police have always had a good batting team capable of hitting the ball really hard,? he added. ?And with the team Stars have this season I wasn?t shocked to see them lose.
?But our goal is to go all the way this year because in the last two seasons we have come up short.?
