Stars put their crown on the line

For the second weekend in succession, reigning Central Counties champions Western Stars will put their crown on the line when they take to St. John's Field against Devonshire Recreation Club today in the second round of the competition.

After posting a whopping 296 for six against Social Club in last weekend's first round, Stars then skittled their opponents out for just 72 in just 23 overs.

Jermaine Postlethwaite led the batting for Stars with an undefeated 102 while Justin Robinson grabbed four wickets for 21.

But despite the fact that Devonshire have encountered a mixed season so far in the First Division, Stars' skipper Albert Steede won't be underestimating his opponents.

"We take no team lightly because all it takes is for one or two people to make significant contributions and then you never know," Steede said. "We take it one game at a time, try to play solid cricket - as we have been playing thus far - and hopefully we will come out victorious."

Stars are the only undefeated team in all competitions.

"We are undefeated but we still don't have anything to show for it," said Steede. "So there is still a long way to go. That's our main goal and objective for the moment."

Meanwhile, all Devonshire skipper Winston Trott wants from his team is consistency, the right frame of mind and a little hard work.

"We have a lot of young players that we are currently working with right now," said Trott. "We are trying to get them ready, but I think that we still lack a bit of consistency."

Devonshire's hopes rest on the shoulders of Wendell Swan, skipper Trott, Rudy Smith, Thomas Ball and Omar and George Amory.

"We are just trying to push them at the moment and with the youthful team that we have I just hope that they come to the game in the right frame of mind and come prepared to work hard," said Trott.

In tomorrow's Premier Division action, St. George's and Bailey's Bay will lock horns at Wellington Oval in the day's top match.

Last weekend St. George's suffered their second loss of the season at the hands of Stars, while Corey Hill's team racked up a formidable total at Sea Breeze Oval before watching in disbelief as St.David's comfortably eclipsed their score with eight wickets in hand.

Somerset Cricket Club picked up their second win of the season against Cleveland last time out and now find themselves facing Southampton at Somerset.

Somerset coach Winston Reid will be hoping his team can repeat last weekend's form while Rangers will be looking to remain on pace with leaders Stars.

Defending champions St. David's are fast regaining the form which saw them conquer all last season and now find themselves third in the standings. The Islanders will make the short trek to Sea Breeze Oval where they will meet Eastern Counties rivals Flatts, while Stars entertain Cleveland at St. John's Field.

In the First Division, Warwick and Willow Cuts will feature in a prelude to the first round of the Western Counties Cup at Southampton Oval, while Devonshire and PHC square off against each other at Devonshire Rec field.

In the Division's remaining match, Police shouldn't encounter too many difficulties against Social Club at Police Field.

All matches begin at 12 noon.

Allen Richardson and not Lionel Cann was the last St.David's player summoned before the Islander's disciplinary committee along with Clay Smith. We apologise for the error.
