The new harness racing season got underway on Sunday with a number of exciting races as three two-year-olds made their debut at Vesey Street.

Fernand Rego's Little Bear had two seconds while Eddie Roque's Tuxedo Bowtie secured a first and a third.

Michael DeCosta's El Grande placed fourth in both heats while Roque and Michael Roberts were the most successful drivers on the day with three wins each. Colin Mello and David Lopes had two wins.

Two new drivers enjoyed winning efforts. Randy Wilkinson drove Pat's Recovery to her first win in some time and Shoron Hunt won with the speedy mare Custom Eyes'd.

The feature race of the day was won by Nateway, driven by Nick DeCosta. Grand Shady with Michael DeCosta in the sulky and Carolina's Jubilee with Murray Terceira driving, shared the honours in the free-for-all, each winning one heat.

For the first time in local harness racing history, the sport now has a proper start truck. It was formerly used at Freehold Raceway in New Jersey and was donated to the local club.
