The Regeneration of Bermuda’s Economy initiative was started to try and get a dialogue going about Bermuda’s economy and the effect that it is having on each Bermudian. It was also intended to educate the average person on where we are financially as a country and solutions to make Bermuda the viable and vibrant economy it used to be. It is not a racial thing. It is not a political thing. It is a Bermuda thing.As we see times change, our attitudes and mindsets must change along with them. What was relevant 50 years ago in methods of building, laws and technology are certainly not as relevant today. So how can attitudes and mindsets be the same and still expect Bermuda and her people to move forward?The articles over the past few weeks were intended to get Bermudians thinking about their Island and how they can get involved in making a difference. Everyone will have a different opinion as each person is different and has had different exposure and experiences. The only thing that we all have in common is that we are all Bermudians and have a responsibility to ensure that our country is always moving forward. We cannot sit idle and hope that by some miracle or magic, the economy and our way of living will correct itself.Bermudians have always been able to rally together. We see it in times of need with everyone coming together to help their neighbour, be they foreign or local, after a hurricane. We see it in times of tragedy with the entire community comforting each other after a family is the victim of violence. We see it in our social activities such as Cup Match with Bermudians explaining the game and sharing food with guest workers and visitors.In order to move forward, we need interesting, innovative and fresh ideas. We must embrace help from all sectors of the community, be they local or foreign. The suggestions that were put forth in the first article were from many different people of many different backgrounds with many different views. These included Bermudian businesspersons as well as foreign businesspersons who operate foreign-owned businesses from here.Therefore, in this critical time Bermudians need to understand and accept that we require assistance from many different aspects of Bermuda’s residential and business communities. The foreign community must also make contributions to this initiative. Many of these foreigners have been in Bermuda for many years. Some foreigners have been in Bermuda contributing to the economy and community for longer than some Bermudians have been alive. They have developed a passion for Bermuda and are willing to assist in any way to see her succeed. We must embrace their ideas as well as they also want what is best for Bermuda.Bermudians were encouraged and are still encouraged to make comments and express their opinions on the various suggestions. What we need however, is for the contribution to be constructive and positive with a can-do attitude. We must all come together as Bermudians to enact change that will benefits ourselves and show the world that we are a progressive society.We must continue this dialogue around the dinner table, the water cooler and the cricket and football field and with our families, friends, children, employers, guest workers and visitors. Everyone has something to contribute. When this diverse community comes together and is able to accept and discuss in a professional, civil and constructive manner the issues that are presented, regardless of who has presented them, then and only then will Bermuda as a whole move forward.Get involved and send us your thoughts.
