Lots of hard work is required to be on the Berkeley quiz team
Everyone is up on stage, the moderator asks the question the team gets it right and everyone cheers!!!
The teams on the stage make it look so easy to answer all the questions. ln order to answer all the questions, a tremendous amount of hard work happens.
The Berkeley Institute started working on the quiz in September.
In September, quiz coach Owen Darrell put up the notice that Berkeley will have a quiz team. A couple of students came to the meeting.
Coach Darrell said that we had to study ten pages a week.
We met at lunch time every day except for Tuesday and Thursday.
On Tuesday and Thursday we had after school practices from 3.35 to 4.30 p.m. When we were studying we had flash cards which had the quiz questions on it.
Each of us would take half of the flash cards and study the cards. Then we would be tested on the cards. We would keep track of how much we got right and write down the number of the ones we got wrong.
Once it was December, we started to have Saturday practices from 9 a.m. till around 3 p.m.
Coach Terry-Lynn Doyle came and gave us our current events questions. We studied the current events all Saturday and over the weekend.
As the time got closer to quiz, we started to practice even harder. We studied like crazy on the quiz books and on the current events.
The week of the competition, we were out of class all week. We were in a room studying like mad.
On the day of the competition, we were all very nervous. Our coaches told us to calm down.
At the beginning of the competition, we just reviewed some questions, then we went on stage.
On the half time break we reviewed some more questions.
That is how The Berkeley Institute prepares for the quiz competition.
