Wade wants inquiry into the Referendum
letter to the Governor asking for a Commission of Inquiry into the events surrounding the postponement of the Independence referendum on August 15.
And yesterday Government backbencher Dr. David Dyer threw his support behind the move, which is opposed by Premier the Hon. David Saul.
"I will have to consider what Dr. Saul does in the next few months,'' Dr.
Dyer said. "Dr. Saul may bring (the commission of inquiry) forward himself.
"He does not seem inclined that way right now, but a week is a long time in politics.'' Dr. Dyer said the Registrar Mrs. Marlene Christopher had the ultimate responsibility once the referendum start date was surpassed.
Consequently, no one had the authority to cancel the voting apart from her, he said.
Confusion surrounded the postponement of the Referendum, which was due to take place hours after Hurricane Felix brushed by the Island, causing millions of dollars in damage.
The Referendum was first delayed indefinitely by Cabinet Secretary Mr. Leo Mills and then postponed for 24 hours after election officers had first opened the polling stations and then closed them.
