Tennis girls go down in semi-finals

Bermuda Tennis players ¬ L-r: Imani Phillips, Ben Lines, Steve Bean (coach), Kaylah Ming and Ricky Mallory III

Bermuda’s girls’ tennis team stumbled at the semi-final hurdle at the Under-12 Masters tennis tournament in Monterray, Mexico today.

Imani Phillips and Kaylah Ming were no match for a Guatemala team that powered their way to a convincing 3-0 win.

It was the duo’s second loss of the tournament and they will now look to get back to winning ways when they take on hosts Mexico II in tomorrow’s third and fourth play-off match.

Earlier during the tournament Bermuda’s girls finished runners-up in their respective group, losing only once at the hands of Mexico II (0-3) in their final group match.

Meanwhile, the Island’s boys team consisting of Ben Lines and Ricky Mallory III also suffered defeat today, losing 1-2 against Nicaragua in a semi-final consolation match.

They are scheduled to play Bahamas tomorrow in a match to determine seventh and eighth place.

Bermuda earned the right to compete in Mexico after placing third at last month’s ITF/GSDF English Caribbean Wilson Under-12 COTECC Team Championships in Jamaica.

“We had a tough day at the courts,” commented Bermuda coach Steve Bean. “But I told our players the way we fought for every point made me proud of them. Got to keep the fight is our motto.”
