Islanders in seventh heaven

Spurred by a quick Lionel Cann hat-trick, St. David's ran out to a five-goal first-half lead and were hardly troubled in this opening FA Cup elimination round tussle at Southampton Oval yesterday.

In fact, the most worrying aspect of this match for the younger and obviously fitter Islanders was the conditions.

With the match played in teeming rain throughout the opening half, a slippery ball proved their undoing for a while until it all went wrong for Dwayne Bean in the Officers goal.

Cann put St. David's ahead after only two minutes, converting a right-wing cross with the Officers defence caught out.

The striker then fluffed two opportunities inside the next 10 minutes after his wingers had provided great service.

Officers hit back with Aaron Adams shooting over after a mishit Cal DeShields shot provided an opening.

Cann then struck twice in nine minutes (26th and 35th), both times following up on Bean's saves against marauding midfielder Shane Weeks.

Keith Jennings then brought a touch of class to the match with a blistering drive from 25 yards in the 37th minute to which Bean had no answer.

And Weeks finally got on the scoresheet in the 39th minute to complete a 13-minute spell that yielded four goals.

St. David's made a few changes at the half with Dale Fox replacing Kuhn Evans in goal, and the former had his work cut out for him.

Fox's blushes were spared in the 48th minute when, after making the initial fumble, he got down well to save from Adams. And with the goal beckoning, Kenny Butterfield was off target with the rebound.

Ed Lightbourne missed a sitter in the 70th minute as Officers continued to improve but St. David's stepped it up when necessary and showed their superiority with Che Simmons adding the sixth on the end of a Weeks cross in the 73rd minute.

Reginald Pitcher occasionally looked threatening and twice had chances to give Officers some consolation before St. David's closed out the scoring.

First, he hit the bar with a 20-yard free kick and then after a superb run that saw off four challenges, he sent Fox the wrong way and dragged his shot wide of the right upright.

Substitute Kanhai Fray made it 7-0 with a simple goal two minutes from time.

Paget 2 Wolves 5 It was almost too easy for Wolves against Paget.

And for a while at Southampton Oval they began to believe it, thus letting the underdogs in with a sniff.

Wolves surged into a four-goal lead and were in position to double that scoreline. But all it took was one goal from Paget's Curtis Azhar to change the complexion of the match.

Azhar did well to lob Brandon Woolridge in the Wolves goal with just over half an hour remaining.

Paget, who were merely spectators up until that point -- save for a Terrence Christopher header that was cleared off the line -- suddenly found life while Wolves looked spent with the exception of firebug midfielder Torriano Trott.

And it was no real surprise when Azhar netted his and Paget's second in the 73rd minute, a well-struck left-footer from 15 yards after some sloppy defending.

Wolves' best source of offence in the second half was on the counter-attack, first-half sub Marlon Lindsay the main link.

But it was his insistence in taking his own penalty that nearly cost the favourites.

The spot-kick -- Jomar Wilkinson had confidently scored with one in the first half -- was miserable and the 'keeper barely had to move to his right to save.

This occurred just before Paget's second goal and for a while it was one-way traffic with Dale Russell, Christopher, Azhar and Troy Burgess prominent.

Reality set in just before the end when Kunte Armstrong netted Wolves' fifth after shrugging off the last defender. His job to score was made easier when the 'keeper slipped on his way out.

Wolves were a different side in the first half. Horace Landy was in great position to score after only nine minutes but headed poorly.

Then Wilkinson shot wide after working his way through the defence.

The opening goal came in the 19th minute when Shannon Berkeley's free kick went through the wall and under the 'keeper's dive.

Rio Peniston's shot came off the inside of a post in the 31st minute and Lindsay, on only seconds earlier for injured Landy, followed up dreadfully.

Paget had their first chance foiled by the bar when Che Williams connected well with a side volley in the 34th minute, but they fell two behind on the next move in the other direction when Ottis Brown dropped Peniston in the area.

Wilkinson's penalty strike was clinical.

Russell, whose left foot has been feared over the years and rightly so, had the ball drop perfectly for him 15 yards out in the 37th minute, but he shot well over.

And, as luck would have it, Wolves took a three-goal advantage on the stroke of half-time with Lindsay finally cashing in.

Lindsay made it 4-0 11 minutes after the restart, expertly rounding the 'keeper and scoring after beating the offside trap.

A rout looked on but, to their credit, Paget fought back well to make a game of it.
