Music filled King?s Square in St. George?s yesterday during the fourth Cruise Ship Concert , which was held as a tribute to the memory of the 9/11 attacks in the United States.

Various entertainment groups from the and took the stage with local organiser Marcus Dagan to the delight of tourists and locals.

A memorial sculpture was also on display at the concert. Mr. Dagan designed the the sculpture, which was built by local craftsman Michael Hooper.

The sculpture will leave the Island this week aboard the , and will be presented to the New York Fire Department at a service in New York City on Sunday. The sculpture, which is made of Bermuda beach glass and pottery, represents the resilience of the human spirit and the fragility of human life in memory of the thousands killed when terrorists hijacked four airliners and targeted the US mainland, bringing down the twin towers of the World Trade Centre and damaging the Pentagon.

There are also two pieces of rare beach glass in the sculpture that represent the two Bermudians killed in the 9/11, Boyd Alan Gatton and Rhondelle Cheri Tankard.

The first Cruise Ship Concert was held two years ago when the crew of the witnessed the devastation caused by Hurricane Fabian. They decided to hold a concert to give back to the community they consider a second home. They raised $18,000 and donated it to the seriously damaged St. George?s Prep School and the families of the Causeway victims.

Mr. Dagan was pleased with the turn out for yesterday?s concert and thanked everyone involved. He said both crews jumped at the chance to participate in the concert becase they spent a lot of time in St. George?s and are considered friends and family to many people in the town.

New Jersey residents Kathleen and Joe Schwartz were in Bermuda on September 11, 2001, when the terrorists struck their homeland. The couple started coming to Bermuda in 1972 and have been back to the Island more than 50 times.

?I think it?s fabulous that this event was organised,? Mrs. Schwartz said.

?Bermudians were wonderful to us during and after the tragedy. They went above and beyond, it was amazing how everyone treated us and how the Island took in people from the diverted planes.?

She also said she was proud to tell Americans she spent 9/11 in Bermuda because locals were so compassionate and involved in the relief effort. She praised the concert saying it illustrated that Bermudians still cared about the victims.
