BAA shatter Rangers' dream of title double
Veteran forward Dennis Davis killed whatever hopes Southampton Rangers had to winning the Second Division and Shield double this season by scoring a goal after 32 minutes to give BAA a surprise victory at Devonshire Rec. last night.
Southampton pressed hard for the equaliser in the second half of this Shield quarter-final tie and should have pulled it off when they earned a penalty after BAA centre-back Robert Pacheco pulled down Omari Hart in the 52nd minute, but midfielder Corey Simmons put his spot kick wide.
For BAA it was sweet revenge for the 4-0 defeat that Southampton handed them on February 7 at Southampton Oval in a Second Division clash.
This time BAA called the tune by taking the upper hand in the first half and grabbing the lead when Davis slipped through the middle of the defence to hammer the ball home to establish a 1-0 lead by the half.
It was a deserved lead for BAA who took the initiative in the opening half, pushing powerfully forward and showing their intentions of scoring.
Southampton on the other hand struggled and were forced to play second fiddle soccer for much of the half.
BAA finished the half with forward Allan Dill putting a shot over from close range.
Although Simmons put his penalty wide Rangers maintained a decisive edge in the second half, but time and time again good approach work was ended by solid defending by a defence marshalled well by centre backs Pacheco and former Rangers player Anthony Stoneham.
Southampton brought on Ricky Nisbett and Steven Cooper to add bite in their attack but not even these changes could produce the equaliser they desperately sought.
