Tribute to women who helped to shape Bermuda

Ruth Thomas: 'Mosaic' author and performer.

Tonight and tomorrow night's performances mark the second appearance of Ruth Thomas & Company in a Bermuda Festival, and in keeping with the celebration of Bermuda's 400th anniversary the title of the new mosaic is 'Women of our Time – On Whose Shoulders We Stand'.

The performance will showcase local actors and Bermudian dancers working here and abroad. Written by Ms Thomas and performed by Leo Mills, Gary Phillips, Grace Rawlins, Rowan Vickers, and the author, the mosaic is a tribute to the women who have helped to shape Bermuda through their contributions as individuals, groups and organisations over the 400 years since the wreck of the Sea Venture in 1609.

In a combination of drama and dance, the strengths, successes and struggles of suffragettes, artists, nurses, teachers, lodges, parliamentarians, mothers and others are highlighted as the tapestry of Bermuda's social, cultural and historic development unfolds.

Bermudian choreographer Conchita Ming is introducing a new piece which she has created especially for this mosaic.

'Women of our Time' is divided into five main dance components and danced by Brittany Legere Adams, Karissa Roberts, Shaydrina Hassell, Shomeiko Ingham and Sierra Renae Robinson.

They are: 'Remember the Circle of the Sky', the portrayal of an Indian princess sold into slavery; 'Bermuda Tapestry', about events leading to the death of slave Sally Bassett; 'A Woman Named Prince', about the first published black woman, which spurred the abolition of slavery in British colonies; 'On the Same Terms as Granted to Men', about the efforts of the suffragettes; and 'Modern Bermudian Women', a tribute to significant 20th century females. A finale will encapsulate the various eras.

The venue is the City Hall theatre, and curtain time is 8 p.m. For tickets/further information visit website www.bermudafestival.org
