prison sentence yesterday.

Ryan Norris Furbert, 28, of Long Ridge Pass, Devonshire, was sentenced by Chief Justice the Hon. Mr. Austin Ward in Supreme Court for store breaking.

Mr. Ward also ordered treatment for drug addiction.

On January 12, Furbert used a two-handled hammer to smash into Walker Christopher jewellery store, making off with goods worth almost $8,000.

Senior Crown Counsel Mr. Brian Calhoun said the break-in followed a number of previous convictions for attacks on jewellery stores including Triminghams, Otto Wurtz, Mall Jewellers and Astwood-Dickinson.

"It appears he's covered them all now -- at least most of them,'' he said. In sentencing, the Chief Justice praised members of the public whose recollection of Furbert's licence number led Police directly to his Pembroke residence.

"People who provide Police with information should be commended for taking the cycle number and describing the person who rode away on that cycle after disregarding someone else's personal property,'' he said.

Furbert escaped by motorcycle along Pitts Bay Road after smashing a hole through the shop window and grabbing a gold necklace and bracelets worth $7,880 from a display case.

Police later discovered the cycle parked outside a house with the hammer and a hatchet in the basket.

They apprehended Furbert who was bleeding from cuts to his hands. Police also discovered the stolen jewellery inside a blood-stained towel.

Representing himself, Furbert said a series of events pushed him off a drugs rehabilitation programme and back into drug dependency.

"I really feel ashamed of what I've done and causing embarassment to my family and myself,'' he said. "I'm glad everything was recovered.'' But his request for a social inquiry report was turned down by Mr. Ward who took into consideration Furbert's guilty plea and co-operation with the Police.
