Youth football team donate food hampers to seniors at Packwood Home

Some holiday cheer was spread by a group of junior footballers who donated food hampers to seniors at Packwood Home. The project was undertaken by players from Somerset Bridge to expose youngsters to the spirit of giving.“We have started having bake sales and trashathons ... it is their community and they should take pride in it,” said coach Roger Lee.On Saturday, with no youth matches scheduled, about 30 youngsters from the Somerset Eagles youth teams agreed to visit the Packwood Home. One of the residents there is Dalton E Tucker.Mrs Tucker is a former principal at Southampton Glebe School, which is now named after her. Some of the boys were, or still, are students at the school.“On that morning we met at White Hill Field and walked on the railway trail to the Packwood Home and then came back to White Hill and had a fun day with some food,” said Mr Lee. “The staff did say they would like to see us again.“As coaches in the community we feel it’s great, steering the players to better their own community, for themselves and others.“Mrs Tucker stood up and thanked them on behalf of the Packwood Home while the boys sang two Christmas songs for the seniors and two of them made the presentation.“We decided we wanted to do something in the community and encouraged the community to participate. We partnered with Packwood Home as an institution in our community.”Mr Lee credited senior coach and technical director for the youth coaches, Marlon Rojas and Timothy Telford, and senior players Lorenzo Burch, Kacey Smith, Ian Armstrong and Jerome Dowling, who all help with coaching the youngsters, for their assistance with the project. Some 54 youngsters in the three youth teams participated in the drive, along with the senior team.
