Crash victim Mr. Don Swallow and the wife of Mr. Robert Austin, who died here on April 9, have both written letters of thanks to the hospital.

Mr. Swallow, 55, was a visitor on the cruise ship Queen Elizabeth 2 in early June. He received head and back injuries after losing control of a livery cycle on St. David's Road and crashing into the fence of the US Naval Air Station.

He was taken to the hospital where doctors expressed concern about a spinal cord injury and several broken bones.

Mr. Swallow wrote to hospital executive director Mr. Hume Martin: "I would like you to know that everyone I dealt with treated me with compassion and dignity.

"They were helpful and cheerful at a time when my anxiety level was very high, whether it was a doctor, nurse, the person who arranged the TV service or the man who sold the newspaper. I could not have asked for better care especially from the nurses on the ward. I appreciate what your staff did for me.'' Mr. Bob Austin was taken ill on April 6 and died in the hospital on April 9.

His wife, Mrs. Charlotte Austin wrote: "The children and I want to express our deepest thanks for the thoughtfulness of all those who were involved, who took the time to discuss the problem with us and to explain everything being done.

"We all felt we must be in the most outstanding hospital in the world. The names we remember were Dr. Marion Watlington, Sue Brown, Jo Watt, Karen Bradshaw, Phillipa Franklin, Mandy Eales and Fran Robinson. I'm certain there were others who helped too.

"The loss was great to me but I have to feel that everything that could be done was accomplished with expertise and kindness.''
