Drugs trial delayed as Pearman battles health problems in US

An importation trial was again halted yesterday because defence lawyer Victoria Pearman was flown off the Island for medical reasons.

Ms Pearman was flown to the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, at 11:55 p.m. on Friday.

Ms Pearman is representing Jamal Hart who has been charged with importing $500,000 worth of cannabis to the Island in 2003.

He denies any wrongdoing.

On Thursday, junior defence counsel Charles Richardson told the court Ms Pearman had been taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with chest pains and was being kept in for observation.

He proceeded to take over Ms Pearman?s duties and questioned a witness that had been flown to Bermuda for the trial.

However, on Friday the court heard Mr. Richardson had also taken ill and the case was adjourned.

Mr. Richardson was still unwell yesterday and Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves adjourned the case until tomorrow.
