Back to school for asthmatics
Returning to school next week presents special challenges for children with asthma.Asthma specialist nurse Liz Boden said the second week of school in both the US and the UK usually sees the most cases of asthma admissions to the hospital for the entire year. Here in Bermuda, where humidity makes everything musty and mouldy, conditions are usually worse the first weeks of school. This is because over the summer the schools have been closed, books and supplies stored, allowing mould and mildew to grow and dust to accumulate.According to Mrs Boden, the rate of coughs and colds also tend to rise when children return to school. She recommended that parents start their children on their preventer inhaler ideally, two weeks before school starts. There’s only a week left before school so if you haven’t started your child on his or her inhaler, it’s time. For more information, advice and/or an asthma action plan for your child, contact school asthma nurse Jennifer Wilson on 332-8915 or contact Open Airways on 232-0264.
