Runners-up reward for Colts
Devonshire Colts brought the curtain down on a highly successful 1992-93 league campaign where they finished second by pummelling Dandy Town 3-0 in an otherwise drab encounter at St. John's field yesterday.
The home side clearly had their minds set on tomorrow night's FA Cup replay against Boulevard, as they showed little inclination to perform in a match having little at stake other than the securing of bragging rights for the off-season.
Surprisingly, a formidable crowd appeared for this match, but more amazingly most stayed until its conclusion despite the low standard of soccer on offer.
Colts got off to a splendid start as midfielder Leonard Hypolite scorched them into an early lead. The score stayed at 1-0 until the second half when Lorenzo Symonds' youthful bunch permanently laid their opponents to rest on strikes from Mark Ray and Ellington Weldon.
Undoubtedly the most attractive of the three goals came from Hypolite in the 11th minute when the dreadlocked player discovered the ball at his feet some 25 yards out and unleashed a right-foot shot that caught goalkeeper Ricky Tucker out of position as it dipped into the left corner.
Following this goal, skipper Craig Smith tried his trusty left boot on a free kick near midfield, which he hammered a foot over the top.
Attempting a response, Town had George Dyer surge forward, combining with Dennis Robinson and releasing on the right, only to toe-poke the ball meekly into the chest of Antoine Lightbourne, when two open team-mates stood beckoning in front of goal.
Neither team particularly dominated, however Colts showed more intestinal fortitude and desire, and this would bear further fruit during the second half.
First, in the 72nd minute, Ray gained possession near the halfway line and made his way toward goal. He worked a neat wall-pass with Weldon and sighting an opening, drove in a low shot that Tucker dove over, allowing the ball to sneak inside the post.
Ever the opportunist, Weldon would close things out when he tapped home from close range a rebound, after Quincey Aberdeen had performed a bit of wizardry on the left to get past full-back Lionel Furbert and shoot.
