Colts go top after Trojan mauling
Just seven days after relinquishing the First Division lead to Somerset Trojans, Devonshire Colts seized it once again with this dramatic and emphatic victory over the west-enders at Frog Lane field yesterday.
The visitors were precisely and skillfully dissected by a Colts team who completed the league double against the Trojans after a 1-0 win at Somerset CC in the first half of the season.
Colts were spearheaded by striker Ellington Weldon who scored a hat-trick. The other goal was netted by Harrison Trott.
Hard-working midfielder Reggie Tucker got a consolation goal for the Trojans five minutes from time -- but by then they were a well-beaten team.
It probably will be a long time before the Trojans experience another game like this -- one that they should have had wrapped up by the half after dominating Colts during the first 28 minutes.
Though they were in full command it was also an agonising period for the Trojans who struck the woodwork three times. Colts must have been wondering what was happening during the avalanche of attacks as they were rarely able to advance beyond the halfway line.
Kelly Simmons struck the bar after seven minutes and Rodney Bascome did likewise after 20 minutes. Then skipper Brian Simons got into the act and hit the post with a fierce shot from 25 yards after 28 minutes.
In addition to these miraculous escapes, the Colts defence was fortunate to have Kwame Tucker blow a chance from close in after 16 minutes and winger Jerry Webb hammer two shots into the chest of goalkeeper Andre Hendrickson just afterwards.
Colts slowly came into the game though and it was from a short free kick by skipper Craig Smith that Weldon controlled the ball and blasted it home off a defender from just outside the box to stun the visitors.
Colts had two more chances before the break with Harrison Trott putting a blast over on a breakaway and skipper Smith striking a hard shot from the edge of the box just wide of the post.
Full-back Larry Simmons headed a corner over and hammered a shot over for the Trojans within two minutes of the restart, but before they could do any harm the home team struck again.
After 49 minutes, Trott stroked home a rebound to make it 2-0 after Winslow Williams in the Trojans' goal could not hold onto a rocket from Weldon.
Seven minutes later came a beauty of a goal which really knocked the stuffing out of the Trojans. Trott raced down the right flank and crossed for Weldon to volley a hard shot home from 15 yards.
Four minutes later the Trojans, now looking more like lambs being slaughtered, were totally demoralised when Yul Wade brilliantly dribbled around centre-back Trevor Dickinson and crossed for Weldon to tap the ball home from close range.
The Trojans got one back through Tucker, but Colts had long proven that they had fully recovered from last week's surprise loss to St. George's at Wellington Oval.
