Bermuda College is aiming to get its nursing degree accredited by a US body, the Senate heard yesterday.Education Minister Nalton Brangman said the college had applied for candidacy to the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, adding: “The ACEN is the only organisation in the United States that grants accreditation to practical, diploma and associate degree nursing programmes.”Sen Brangman said Bermuda would join countries such as Scotland, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands if it obtained the international accreditation.He added that the college’s associate of science in nursing degree was set up with accreditation in mind and an experienced Bermudian nurse educator had recently returned to the Island to teach the programme.As reported last month, Government is funding students who enrol on the nursing retraining programme in a bid to get more Bermudians employed in the health industry.
