BBFS bow out at quarters

Bermuda Brazilian Football School’s under-12 team exited the Dana Cup Tournament in Denmark at the quarter-final stage yesterday with a 5-3 loss to LA Academia FC of Guatemala.BBFS, having placed second in the group phase with three wins and one loss, qualified for the round of 16 earlier this morning when they beat Trauma IF 5-0 to reach the last eight. The Bermuda youngsters led their quarter-final match against LA Academia three times, 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 as Erik Correia scored two magical goals and Rahzir Smith-Jones the other.LA recovered each time and in the final 10 minutes showed a glimpse of their potential as they scored two goals through individual skill and determination, to close the match and qualify for the next round."I am very proud of the boys for making it to the quarter-finals finals,” said coach Cal Blankendal. “Our objective was to qualify for the KO round of the A finals and we achieved our goal.“Our goal was surpassed when we entered the quarter-finals and managed to compete against a Central American Academy team. Not only did we compete but we dominated the match.“In the end they scored two well taken goals but we have shown that Bermuda can compete at the under-12 level. The boys have attracted many admirers for our style of play and excellent behaviour of the entire group.”Today the boys will enjoy a day off to relax before heading to the Brondby Cup near Copenhagen on Saturday where they will face much stronger opposition.“We will play in a nine versus nine group with more than 600 teams,” explained Blankendal. “The teams will include academy teams from FC Brondby and other pro clubs in Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, USA and Belgium.”
