The Royal Gazette had a new Editor yesterday — Damon Wade.Recently the newspaper conducted in-depth research into what content people want to see in print and on our website (www.royalgazette.com) and what they like and dislike most about us.Focus groups were organised by Bermuda-based research group Mindmaps, with more than 100 people taking part — including Damon, whose name was drawn from the hat to be Editor for the Day.Damon, Owner and CEO of Atlantic Energy Solution Group, and ex-Ascendant Executive said: “I was impressed by the The Royal Gazette’s initiative designed to help them improve their product.“That said, it is clear that the hardest part of this initiative will be to act on the feedback provided, in light of, or despite of, all the challenges they face which are not unlike every other organisation, ie staffing levels, technology upgrades, economic climate.“However, it was good to see how the operations works, and it was impressive to see how they quickly pull together today’s stories for printing in the morning’s paper.”Acting Editor Jeremy Deacon added: “I was delighted that Damon accepted the invitation. The focus groups have provided us with some real insight into people’s perceptions of the paper, and website. What they like and dislike, and what would make the two products more relevant to them. I hope Damon learned a lot about how the newspaper is put together every day.“I am acutely aware that The Royal Gazette plays a pivotal role in the daily life of Bermuda and it is hugely important that we are in step with the news and information people want, and the ways they want that information delivered. Over time, I believe that the information garnered from the research will help us to be much more relevant to the entire community.“Now that we have reached out, and listened, we are duty bound to act. At first the changes may not be very obvious, later, I am sure, they will be. We cannot reinvent the wheel, but maybe, as far as The Royal Gazette is concerned, we can make it a little less squeaky.”* How would you improve the paper?
