A proud moment for Gazette reporter

Royal Gazette sports reporter Colin Thompson (right) poses for a picture with Bradford striker Nahki Wells after the League Cup play-off final at Wembley.

By Colin ThompsonDuring a journalism career spanning more than a decade, never have I been prouder than to sit in the press box at Wembley Stadium and witness Nahki Wells carve his name in local football history. With one well directed shot, the 22-year-old Bradford City striker became the first Bermudian to score at the hallowed ground. As Wells celebrated the milestone, I openly wept, overcome with emotion as to what had transpired before me eyes. National pride? Perhaps. It was indeed a wonderful privilege to experience the love and overwhelming support Wells received from his adoring fans, who proudly sang the 'Nahki Wells, Nahki Wells' anthem from the stands throughout the match. After the match Bradford City manager Phil Parkinson expressed how much Wells means to both himself and the Yorkshire club. The man himself took things all in stride with a professionalism belying his tender years. While speaking to Wells in the belly of the stadium I could not help but reminisce about the day I first saw him playing for Dandy Town in a youth match at Somerset Cricket Club many, many years ago.Needless to say, Wells has come a long way since then.On this historic day it was a proud honour to be Bermudian, thanks in no small part to Wells who capped his wonderful 28th minute strike by being chosen as man-of-the-match.Though Wells' professional career may still be in its infancy, the Bantams striker has achieved much in a short period of time.Earlier this season he became the first Bermudian to play at the new Wembley Stadium during the Bantams' League Cup final loss to Swansea. He also led City's scoring with 26 goals in all competitions not bad at all for a player whose career began in humble settings at Wolves and Dandy Town.It is achievements such as these which have reportedly captured the interests of bigger clubs looking to prise Wells away from Valley Parade.May his career continue to flourish, wherever he eventually ends up playing next season.Take a bow Nahki Wells, you've earned it.
