Jonte on target again
In-form striker Jonte Smith helped Metropolitan Police earn a 2-2 draw against East Thurrock in the Ryman League Premier Division at the weekend.Smith, currently on loan from League One side Crawley Town, sparked a late comeback for the hosts when he fired home a close range effort in the 84th minute.Met Police, who were two goals down at half-time, found an equaliser late on when Staforde Palmer netted after being put through by Alan Tait.Smith, 18, penned a one-year professional contract at Crawley last April as a reward for his impressive performances with the Red Devils’ Academy and reserve teams.The son of former national team cricket skipper Clay Smith banged in 25 goals in all competitions, including a hat-trick against Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Youth Cup.Smith netted several goals for the Red Devils’ senior squad during pre-season before joining Met Police on a one-month loan spell last month that has since been extended for another month.Met Police, who are 13th place in the division with nine points from seven matches, were due to take on Margate in the second round of the league cup last night.On Saturday they face South Park on the road in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round.Smith and his team-mates will go into the clash as firm favourites as South Park are one of the lowest ranked teams left in the competition.Met Police are just a win away from advancing to the FA Cup first round proper where they would come up against a league club.
