Island has a low smoking rate
Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. Anti-smoking campaigners in Bermuda boast that we have the smallest rate of smoking for any country in the OECD eight percent.Sweden and the US, the two countries with the next smallest rate, have a whopping 14 percent by comparison.How do these numbers translate to lung cancer? Body & Soul asked the Bermuda Tumor Registry for the most up-to-date picture.A spokesperson explained: “In 2009, 14 out of the 19 reported cases were persons that currently or previously smoked; in 2010, 15 out of the 20 reported cases were persons that currently or previously smoked; in 2011, six of the 17 reported cases were persons that currently or previously smoked.“Six did not say whether or not they had smoked. The remaining five did not smoke at all.”In 2011, of the 17 reported lung cancer cases, nine were males and eight were females, the spokesperson added.There were five cases in the 50 to 59 age range, six in the 60 to 69 range, four between ages 70 and 79 and two between the ages of 80 and 89.
