Bascome, Brown to lead national team

Reunited: Coaches Andrew Bascome (right) and Dennis Brown have been placed in charge of Bermuda’s Digicel Caribbean Cup squad

Andrew Bascome’s dream of coaching Bermuda at the senior international level has become a reality. The coaching guru has been placed in charge of the Island’s senior national squad to compete in next month’s first round of CFU Digicel Caribbean Cup qualifiers in Haiti along with past national squad team-mate Dennis Brown.“It’s a good opportunity and I’ve always wanted to do anything to help my country,” said Bascome, who was due to meet with his players yesterday. “We only have a couple of weeks to get a team ready to go down, but I can assure you that I will do my best.”Bermuda will compete in a group that includes St Martin (French), Puerto Rico and hosts Haiti with only the eventual two top teams advancing to the second round of the regional competition. With the proper approach, Bascome sees no reason why Bermuda can’t advance to the next stage.“We should have a good enough chance just as anyone else,” he said. “But I wouldn’t underestimate no opposition because anyone playing for their country is going to give one hundred percent for sure.“I don’t think any game is going to be easy and we just have to match what they offer because it’s all about character and preparedness to carrying out the responsibilities from the coach and fight till the end.”Bascome said he was looking forward to being reunited with former national squad team-mate Brown.“It’s always good to work with Dennis,” he said. “We were together in the national squad and he was my captain from the youth squad right up to the senior team.“We’ve always had a good relationship and both love football. We both believe in discipline and commitment and so we are going to make sure we have players that are prepared to give their all for their country because it’s more than just talent as you know.“It’s about commitment, sacrifices, being responsible, sharing and playing as a group. You have to have all those qualities outside of talent.”Bascome and Brown have joined the national pool of coaches initially with specific responsibility for the Digicel Caribbean Cup.The pair will be assisted by national academy coaches in the lead-up to the tournament.Chairman of Bermuda Football Association’s player development committee Mark Wade said: “The BFA are excited about the appointment of Andrew Bascome and Dennis Brown as we look to continually improve internationally and meet our objective of being one of the elite nations within the CFU.”This is the first assignment for Andrew Bascome as senior coach, his local record speaks for itself. Both Andrew and Dennis played together on the national team and have been reunited as coaches.”Newly appointed national academy director Richard Todd added: “Andrew and Dennis are exciting additions to the national coaches pool.“Their playing experience at the national level combined with their demonstrated levels of achievement coaching domestically and international travel will bode well for working with the players, not only at the senior national team level but also the national academy. They will get the best out of our players.”
