Time to trim costs

April 19, 2012Dear Sir,With the spiralling numbers of businesses facing what appear to be insurmountable challenges and unfortunate job losses, when will we have a serious look at the Civil Service?I carry no grudge against these employees of the Government, however like the private sector we need to effect economies. Political hot potato you bet, but it needs to be addressed! Why should these people be insulated from the realities the rest of us face. I understand 47 percent of revenues are paid in wages and salaries. Other jurisdictions have had to make some tough choices in job cuts in the public sector. We cannot go forward and pretend this is not seriously problematic. The easiest thing for the PLP to do is lose the election and pass it to the OBA. Simple attrition in saving valuable tax dollars is pie in the sky. The debt this Country is in will not go away by a change in government. The Civil Service and all Government workers should not expect guarantees we can no longer afford. Whoever takes us forward after the election needs intestinal fortitude to make the tough and courageous choices ahead of us. Smarter people than this writer suggest a ten percent pay cut and a 15 percent reduction in staffing levels.GOODNESS SAKESouthampton
