Talented songstress moves to Big Apple in search of her 'big break'

Twanée Butterfield has been singing since she was a small child and is now testing her chops in the Big Apple.

If you haven’t seen musician Twanée Butterfield singing at some event around the Island over the past decade, you’ve either been living off the rock or under a proverbial one. She’s been performing since a young girl and has now set her sights on breaking into the international market with a new music video for her song ‘Lesson Learned’. The budding artist took time out from her recording schedule in New York to talk to The Royal Gazette about her latest career milestones and to express her thanks to her Island community for their continued support. For the past two years Twanée Butterfield has been living in ‘the Big Apple’, working towards taking her music career to new levels. She’s joined forces with sound and recording company Mudd Monkey Inc whose CEO Ky Miller has worked with rapper 50 Cent and has been busy writing and recording new material with the hopes of getting signed to a label. When she’s not in the studio she’s rehearsing and plans to start performing live in the US in the coming months.“For me [moving] was a very crucial step if I wanted to take my singing career to the next level because unfortunately the music industry isn’t as well known in Bermuda.“I have been singing for my whole life in Bermuda and I feel I reached the highest level I could at the moment.”She has gotten more exposure since relocating to New York, and seen different doors open for her. “Everything really fell into place,” she said, adding that she is still waiting for her ‘big break’.Miss Butterfield has recently released tracks, like ‘Put It On You’ and ‘Fire It Up’. Her latest song and music video, ‘Lesson Learned’, premiered on her YouTube site just last week. She hopes people can relate to the song, which has a catchy chorus line: “It’s just another lesson learned. I gave my heart to you, I changed myself for you, I put my trust in you. It’s just another lesson learned.“Nothing was ever enough for you, but now I know the truth, so when I think of you, you were just another lesson learned.”Miss Butterfield co-wrote the song and said the lyrics and video were inspired by “past experiences in my life”. The video was shot in New York by Shannon Muir. She hopes to one day be able to shoot a music video of similar quality on Island and said it would be a good way to promote her Island home.“For me Bermuda will always be my home so I will never be able to stay away for too long.”So far local radio stations have been instrumental in promoting her music. “The radio stations in Bermuda have been so supportive. I released a record called ‘Fire it up’. I heard they played it very often.“‘Lesson Learned’ is being rotated on all the stations as well. People keep telling me ‘hey your song is on the radio right now’. So I am so grateful and they have been great as far as support.”She is asking for as many people as possible to watch her new video on YouTube in hopes she will be able to pick up a recording contract one day industry insiders use social media sites to gauge artists’ popularity.Miss Butterfield started her vocal training here under Daniel Hill. She first began singing publicly as part of the Allen Temple AME Church gospel choir.Since then, she has performed around the Island.Though she describes her sound as universal, she is currently releasing R&B songs and trying to appeal to that market.“I'm releasing mostly R&B songs right now because the current resources I have are geared more towards the hip hop and R&B crowd and through my experience thus far, I can see that they are very loyal.“I haven't tried to tap into the ‘pop’ world yet so I'm not sure what I'm in for, hopefully they will love it.“My wish is for the world to be ready for me when I start transitioning into all of the genres because it is very untraditional and risky as the music industry feels that you should only target one demographic audience. I love to sing and listen to all genres so I personally feel that the more universal I am the more people I can reach out to."She said her ultimate goal is to become “world renowned”, adding: “I feel this is my God given purpose in life and I intend on fulfilling it.”Watch Ms Butterfield’s video: www.youtube.com/twaneeb.
