Lionel Cann reckons his wealth of expertise can resurrect Warwick’s cricket programme.The 39-year-old St David’s Islander has inked a one-year player/coaching deal that will see him oversee the First Division club’s entire cricket programme during the upcoming season.Cann has taken over the reins of a club that failed to win a single match in all competitions last season and one of his first priorities at the helm will be to instil a winning mentality in his players.“I want to bring a winning mentality and professional environment at Warwick,” he declared. “This is by far one of the youngest teams in Bermuda so I want to instil in the players some professionalism and a winning attitude to help enhance their skill level.”As a West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) certified coach, Cann comes highly equipped for the job. And his experiences playing professionally in Scotland and internationally with the senior national squad could also prove to be a huge asset as Warwick seek to turn their flagging cricket fortunes around.Cann said a burning desire to give something back to the sport heavily influenced his decision to coach.“My passion has always been playing cricket but obviously it’s time to put something back into the game,” he added. “People took time out for me so that I could progress and become an international player and be successful and now it’s time for me to do the same.“In choosing Warwick I wanted to choose a young team that I can instil my way of coaching and beliefs of how cricket should be played. So I am very excited to have been put in charge of a cricket program at a club such as Warwick.“To be able to come back and put all of the experiences that I have gained throughout my long career into my own coaching style is very exciting.”What perhaps excites Cann most is being afforded the opportunity to pass on his expertise in actual game day scenarios.“I have an added bonus being at the pinnacle of my game so I can play with the team and show the players what they have to do on the field,” he said. “This is a good way of giving something back while still playing.“Taking this role is like a rebirth knowing you are going to give something back to the game that you love especially to young people. I will definitely pass on the knowledge that I have gained.“This year is going to be very exciting and I am very passionate about it.”Cann severed ties with St David’s under controversial circumstances towards the end of last season.The aggressive all-rounder quit playing after accusing some of his Islanders team mates of smoking marijuana in the dressing room in front of his teenaged son before a Premier match at Lords.St David’s management subsequently took disciplinary action against those linked with the allegations.
